Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich endured a moment of extreme awkwardness when he met injured Marine Captain Rueben Chickensalad at a campaign stop today. Upon being introduced to the Marine, Gingrich said, “You, sir, are a hero”. Chickensalad responded with: “Sir, I’m no hero, a hero is a sandwich.” Gingrich’s unfortunate retort to the Marine was “Well, Captain Chickensalad, you are both a hero and a sandwich”. Following this exchange, both men sat grimly in absolute silence.
