Mike Flanagan dies
One of the greats from the height of the Orioles' glory years, when the city and team were as much of a family as any team and city in sports history, died last evening at his home in Sparks, Maryland, on the family property off York road. Mike Flanagan emitted an aura of quiet dignity throughout his playing days, in his broadcast career, and with his work in the Oriole’s front office. Mike Flanagan played at a time when the team seemed more like a group of middle-aged guys having a soft-ball game than major-league athletes- But only in their demeanor and not in their style of play, which was precise, disciplined, unselfish, and relentlessly holding itself to a higher standard and work ethic. Condolences go to his family and to all the Oriole family for the loss of this great beacon of 'the Oriole Way".
